this is VERY interesting dude, good find!

i was thinking along the same lines as you. even if a small portion of the old track was cleaned up for autocross, we may have found our site. i know there are a lot of people here who would like to autocross, but just can't or won't make an hour drive to do it. getting a regular event or two in our area would possibly get more people into amateur racing to the point (like many of us now are) that they'll actually take a small road trip to attend a race. on the other hand, a quality venue in our area would attract racers from jax, savannah, columbia, charlotte and atlanta. we usually bish about being in the middle of different regions, but it could prove to be a silver lining.

i got to talking with an old timer vw racer at the vw show a few weeks ago. there used to be an Sports Car Club of Augusta here, and they used to race all over town. autocross and road racing i think... hard to say for sure. I can't help but think how cool it would be to revive the old racing club. i have his phone number and he also gave me a POC of a guy who works at the Triumph motorcycle dealer almost across the street from my apartments.

something to think about. if anyone has any ideas or suggestions let me know. maybe we can start some gears turning (no pun intended) in this town.

Unfortunately that surface appears to be too far gone to be of use. Of course we do need to check it out. Where was it located? Who owns it now?

reading the post on the second link above, at least part of the land is a park, should be located not far from carolina speedway. just down the road i think, but i'm having a hard time making out the map.

If I'm hearing things right, we've designed a school that will be built on the "pit" area of the track. I hear the land was bought by the school district.

I'll ask around here at work.

Who do we need to do to go about rebuilding, loaning, etc. I'm willing to look into things, but we need to decide if this is worth pursuing or not.

thats amazing is it in Augusta Richmond county? If nothing else maybe we can get some people to recognize this place.  I know a couple of people who could help us out with any legislation bs that ew might have to go through. The thought of a place like that not being around for me to tell my children about sucks.  If nothing else we need to see if we can perserve whats left of it wether it be for historical value or car people (like ourselves) to go out and enjoy.  Reading some of the names and some of the people that raced there.  It is amazing.  If you all want to get together and see if we can save this place please let me know I will do ALL I can to help.

I would but what?

I'm pretty sure it's all sold to the county. They aren't likely to sell it now.

Look here you turd...   In your post you asked where it was at and who owns it.  I was merely saying, I went out and looked and to redo it would be impossible.

I did have a pow wow on the way home with Spence (aka Trike) and think it would be great idea to approach Richmond County Parks and ask about cleaning up and maybe remodeling the pit road.  I wonder how hard it would be to get someone to approach them about making this section maybe a historical landsite.  I believe with a lil TLC and a decent size group of people pit roadcould be cleaned up and maybe the grabdstands could be replaced to at least give it the original look and feel just in that section.  With maybe an addition of a shelter with a grill to have club meets, CSRA Motorsport gatherings, or what have you.

This is the area I would like to see re-done. Diamond lake park off of Windsor Springs Rd.  This section would be on your right just after you enter Diamond Lake

Augusta International Raceway 1963-1969

Guys/Girls, I am in the process of documenting the old Augusta International Raceway road course.  With approval from the county I am getting information along with photos of the entire 3 mile course.

It is in pretty good shape to be 40 years old and is actually only "broken" in three places:  The original "front straight" which was actually a long left handed sweeper (this is now the entrance to the Diamond Lakes Recreational Area),  a very small section has been removed in the turn 2/3 area, and the old "bridge" where the infield spring fed lakes emptied into Sprit Creek which was outside the track.

Keep in mind the track itself is not open to the public as there has been some trash dumping (if you can believe that) on the old track.

This Monday, November 17th, is the 40th anniversary of the only NASCAR race run on the old track and Channel 8 is going to have an interview I did about that date 40 years ago.  Tune in to the NBC station if you can.

This weekend I will taking photos of the track for my documentation ( www.historicmustang.com/augustainternational.html ).  As soon as I get these up on the site, you will be able to see a picture every 100 yards around the entire track!.

Keep in mind this track was a "counter clockwise" orientation, which is opposite from most here in the states.  As you enter the "recreation area" the cars would be heading toward you rather than away from you.  The pit lane is the long stretch that you see to your immediate right as you enter the park.  Again, the cars would be coming toward you.

The old garage area (50' x 300') is immediately before the pit area as you enter the park.  It is easy to spot.

I will put up more as I get the info.

Thanks,
HistoricMustang
